The Sony XBR-HX950 is a sleek 3D TV that offers a sharp, high-definition picture and a frameless design. This lightweight television features intelligent LED backlighting and anti-glare glass, for a crisp and clear 3D image any time of the day. It may not have as many input or output ports as other 3D TVs we reviewed, but the built-in Wi-Fi and user-friendly interface are just a couple of the reasons that we give this 3D TV the TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award.

The Sony XBR-HX950 is a smart TV with both internet and 3D capabilities. You can get online on your television and stream movies or browse for new apps. It has all the necessary hookups so you can connect to your personal computer or your local area network. The television has two composite video inputs and one component video input.

You can turn regular, two-dimensional programming into three dimensions of fun and excitement. This means a regular football game can far surpass tunnel vision; you will feel like spectator in the stadium. Kids will love this feature when applied to their favorite cartoons.

This 3D TV features four HDMI ports for your all of your game systems and various DVD and 3D Blu-ray players. Two of these HDMI ports are located on the back of the television, while the additional two are on the right side of the unit. It also has two USB ports for additional accessories. A USB port can be helpful for showing off a picture of your latest vacation or showing a schematic on a larger scale.

The Sony 3D TV is compatible with both digital and analog audio signals. These are located on the back of the television next to the two HDMI ports. It has two composite inputs, but only one component input, which could be a problem if you have multiple devices vying for that port. You can also connect your computer to the 3D TV and display your desktop on the big screen by using the PC input port.

This 3D TV utilizes active 3D technology, meaning the television and the 3D glasses work simultaneously to create an almost lifelike three-dimensional image. You must have the images displayed in full screen to view the 3D effect. You are not limited to movies or broadcasts released in 3D. The Sony XBR-HX950 is capable of converting ordinary two-dimensional images into three-dimensional entertainment. With this feature, you can turn your favorite sporting events and television shows into seemingly interactive programming. When you have the 3D feature turned off, your television functions as an impressive 2D HDTV.

The Sony model we reviewed is the 55-inch class. The same 3D television, model XBR-HX950, also comes in 65 inches. Though they vary in size, each of these has the stunning resolution of 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels and the standard widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9 inches. Images appear lifelike and in a gorgeously full array of colors, thanks to the LED-based backlighting. Sony's Intelligent Peak LED technology lights sections of the picture individually to produce an overall vivid image.

Sony claims you can efficiently view the 3D TV from a wide viewing angle of up to nearly 178 degrees. Images on the 3D television refresh at a rate of 240Hz, and Sony describes their television contrast ratio as "infinite." A contrast ratio compares the brightness of a white signal with that of a black signal. Sony states that when the 3D TV backlight is turned off, the luminance measurement is 0.00 cd/m2, and the resulting dynamic contrast ratio is infinite. Regardless of their specifications, the contrast is very impressive.

Included with your 3D TV is a tabletop stand that swivels 20 degrees both left and right, and tilts up and down six degrees. You also get the remote and user manual, though you can view the user manual online as well. You need no USB adapter for your 3D TV's Wi-Fi connection, as the Wi-Fi is built into the television.

Unfortunately, Sony does not include any active 3D glasses with your 3D TV purchase. And the glasses are required to enjoy the 3D viewing. Because some sets of 3D glasses can cost quite a bit, this omission is regrettable.

While all of the other 3D TVs we reviewed only had a one-year warranty, the Sony XBR-HX950 comes with a warranty that lasts for 18 months. This may only be half a year longer than other warranties we found in this review, but when you're purchasing a big ticket item like a television every bit of extra coverage helps put your mind at ease.

You can search on the FAQs page by keyword, which is helpful to find your specific problem. Although it still was a little difficult to navigate. If you have additional questions about your 3D TV, you can contact Sony technical support by phone, email or live chat.

Sony XBR-HX950 Summary:
8.7/10

Overall, we found the XBR-HX950 to be an excellent TV for 3D viewing. It offers lifelike colors and smooth, fluid motion. Plus, with the slim profile, you can easily mount it on your wall or use the included TV stand. This 3D television also features built-in Wi-Fi, so you can access the internet on a large screen from the comfort of your couch. If you want to enjoy the 3D features of this TV, you'll need to purchase the 3D glasses separately, but even as a regular 2D television, the Sony XBR-HX950 is one of the top ten best.
